Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game.

Participants use a GPS-enabled device or smartphone to navigate to specific coordinates and find hidden containers (called “caches”).

Geocaching is an any day, any time activity that can take you to amazing and beautiful places. Geocaches are physical containers or simply a location hidden all around the world you can find from a set of coordinates.

How It Works:
  1. Find a Cache: Use a geocaching app (like Geocaching.com, this is free) to find coordinates of a hidden container or location in your area.
  2. Search: Head to the location and look around using the hints provided.
  3. Sign the Log: Once found, open the container, sign the logbook with the date, and put the cache exactly where you found it. If it is an Earth Cache (see description below), there may not be a specific container. Simply a sign or other type of marker.
Common Cache Types
  • Traditional: The most common; a straightforward container at the published coordinates.
  • Multi-Cache: You must solve a series of clues at the first location to find the coordinates for the next.
  • Mystery/Puzzle: You must solve a riddle or puzzle to get the final coordinates.
  • Earth Cache: is an educational, virtual geocache. Instead of finding a hidden physical container, participants use GPS coordinates to visit unique geological locations. The goal is to learn about the planet’s history, formations, and the natural processes shaping the Earth.
The Unspoken Rules
  • The “Swap” Rule: If you take an item from the cache, you must leave an item of equal or greater value.
  • No Spoilers: Do not post the exact location or hide spot online in your digital logs.
  • Trackables: Some caches contain coins or tokens (called Trackables) with unique codes. You can move them from one cache to another and track their journey online.
